Startup Riot : Portland, Oregon

November 10, 2012

What is Startup Riot Portland SHOW? It's one day where thirty startups present for 3 minutes each and then answer questions for 3 minutes. We expect some deals will get funded during the day. Plus it's affordable to attend and we make sure only the right people get in the room (sorry, no non-sponsoring service providers). Oh, and all the proceeds from this event will go to benefit LEP Charter High School. What's not to like?

Local organization in Portland provided by Mark Grimes and Michael Coates.

Venue
We'll be at Buckley Center Auditorium at the University of Portland for our day long extravaganza!

John Friess (Co-Founder & CEO, Journey Gym) is focused on the process of founding and building the marketability, viability and exit ability of idea and emerging stage companies. The current company that he and his co-founding team are building towards a positive exit is journey gym, which was founded in 2008 and which has invented the world's first truly portable universal gym. journey gym markets their patented compact portable gym to hotel chains, fitness clubs, diet centers, corporate offices and consumers as the laptop of personal fitness, allowing for everyone to fit in a little bit workout wherever they are whenever they can.

Before co-founding Journey Gym, he co-founded wired.MD in 2000 with his brother Mark Friess, which is a leading health education company who creates and delivers patient and consumer health education videos via the company's SaaS product, via health portals, EMR/EHRs, CCTV and DVD to over 1000 hospitals, practices and corporations throughout the globe. The company was taken from concept to completion through being acquired and fully integrated in 2008 into the industry leading patient education company, MediMedia Corporation, for 2.5 times the funds invested in the company.

Keynote
Prior to becoming CEO of MergerTech, Nitin Khanna was the founder, Chairman and CEO of Saber Corp., one of the largest providers of state government solutions in the country. Nitin started Saber in July 1998 and helped grow it a minimum of 50% each year.

Saber's growth was celebrated by an Inc. 500 award in both 2006 and 2007, the Deloitte Fast 500 award, and the #1 spot on Oregon's Fastest Growing Companies list in 2007. This dramatic growth led to a significant investment by Accel-KKR Private Equity in 2005 and to the eventual sale of the company for $460MM to EDS in December 2007. Nitin then assumed leadership of EDS' government business operation that included Saber.

Prior to Saber, Nitin held a number of positions in Consulting and Education at Oracle Corporation. He holds Master's and Bachelor's of Engineering degrees from Purdue University.
